Summer leisure clothing style

Are track aka running shorts becoming more popular? As a runner up until the past couple of months I never saw anyone wearing them but other people running. Now I am seeing people wearing them every where, like fast food places, putting fuel in the car, the corner grocery store just about anywhere in town. I will admit I have always liked them for comfort but never considered them a fashion statement. Are you seeing more people wear them this summer where you live?
