Do corsets really work to have a thinner waist?

I'm not joking with this question.
Actually I'm kinda curious and interested since I've been looking forward to buy a corset but idk they make me feel a bit scared

If you get a tailored one to fit your body height and shape they can be affective, but not healthy to wear overlong periods of time , but I like the costumes cosy play steampunk look
