Never been into fashion?

Me either, but weird thing. I was recently struck with the half-serious idea to make some of my own clothes because I got to thinking about things I want my clothes to do and how they should look, but literally NOBODY makes clothes that way. Maybe I should? Couldn't hurt I guess.

My granddaughter makes a lot of her clothes for the same reason. And to economies, she goes to thrift shops and finds different clothes with the types of materials she wants and cuts the bits and pieces from them. She likes some things to look patchy, rough and smooth, light and dark, shiny and matte. Or she will find the perfect look, but not quite the cut she wants so she takes it home and reconstructs it to suit her. What can I say? The girl is an artist. Makes her own jewelry too, and she's a talented painter.

@Serenitree That's a great idea. A young woman had a blog where she would go to the thrift stores and buy clothing really cheap and remake them into something fashionable for her. I thought she was really creative.

@Serenitree you should consider the thrift shop idea for fabrics.

@Serenitree That is a pretty good idea for getting cheap fabric in a variety of materials.

@cherokeepatti My granddaughter is talented, but not wealthy, so the thrift shop idea works best for her.

I haven't sewn much in the past decade but if I start up again I'll keep that in mind. Fabrics are harder to find than they were when I was younger, so many of the fabric stores have closed down, and what is sold is usually expensive, they aren't having the same sales they used to.

@Xuan12 Yes, it is. Especially if you like to add a contrasting collar or shirt cuffs or pockets or any thing where you only need a few small swatches.

@Serenitree I've found so many items in Goodwill since the end of the summer for $2 or less each when they have their half-price markdowns on their tags, they do a different color every week. Sometimes I see something I like that's not on sale for half price and wait a week or two or three and then find it and buy it...you can't sew anything for $2 cause of the buttons and threads. Some of these things are brand new.

@cherokeepatti Exactly the type of thing I meant. Beautiful.

@cherokeepatti Oh damn...that's right. The fabric store in my town just closed down a few months ago. Gah, the timing of it! Oh well.

@Xuan12 Thrift shops will always survive. The harder the times, the more of those there are.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Xuan12 Hancock's was number one here, Walmart sells fabrics once again but they don't have the variety that Hancock's had, there's Hobby Lobby & Michaels & Joannes in the mall though. Garage sales can be a good source of fabrics if you bring a tape measure to measure the length and width of the pieces.

@Serenitree consignment stores are fly-by-night though, it's usually the people who bring in their clothes to sell at those stores that end up losing big time.

@cherokeepatti I never really went into consignment stores myself. No special reason, I just didn't.
