Well that was interesting

A couple of years ( maybe more now) back, I did my DNA test, because I was doing my genealogy and trying to figure out who my father was. I expected the results to tell me my ethnic breakdown and all that, but what I didn't expect to find out is

"This analysis indicates that your parents are probably related."

When I first found that out, I kinda freaked out a little. I mean, I had all kinds of questions, like how closely related and such. At the time, they had no way to determine that, but today I ran the results again, and this is the info they have now.🙂

I know who my father is, figured that out through DNA matches a couple of years ago. Now, I just have to figure out how my mother and father are related in my tree. Both family lines were in Pennsylvania, Germany, and England during the same time periods, so this could be fun, not.

Sounds like they were as related as second cousins usually are. Second cousins share 2 out of 8 great grandparents.

So the simplest answer is they were 2C in the notation above. But they could have shared 4 out of 16 great great grandparents or something like that. When you get back to the 1800s and earlier, people weren't so mobile; they would often marry within their small village. So over a few hundred years, everyone in the village would be somewhat related.

Your parents could both have emerged from an interrelated village like that.

@ElwoodBlues I think you could be right. It is going to be challenging for me to find where they connect in my tree, though. Oh well, it gives me something to do. Thank you for your thoughtful comment and your help decoding the relationship for me. I appreciate it. 🙂
