Excellent point mejess. First they need to behave respectfully, and then they can feel they have done their part, if they are then disrespected it is not through their own fault.

It is fundamental. And when it disappears society starts slipping like quick sand. But I have some tenuous optimism. A lot of younger people (the Unspanked Generation with the Helicopter Parents) recognize some of the problems with the way they were brought up and are determined not to repeat it.

hahaha. I have three kids. We're decent parents. We taught them respect. They are wonderful to every adult except us. Having talked to many parents and teachers, it seems par for the course. One can only hope the respect comes in time.

Interesting. I am an orphan but it seems to me that this battle must be won by age 4 or else any change in behavior towards the better seems to me much more problematic.

The plot is quite complicated. Parents who are still the legal caregivers for a child may need and deserve a certain level of automatic compliance just for safety's sake. Compliance in emergencies is often lifesaving and most of what parents call "respect." True respect approaches admiration and that can only be earned and deserved.
