How can parents prevent their teenage daughters from dressing trashy?

One thing I do is encourage my 13 year old daughter to watch movies from the forties and fifties on TCM -- so she can see women who look stunningly attractive and sexy -- but not trashy -- circa early twenty-first century.

my mum keeps telling me i could look so pretty if i didnt dress like a bum lol
That is an old Momism (or Mumism in the UK) -- but it is one that is usually right.😉

See, and I have the opposite problem. My oldest daughter wants to dress in what we've identified as the "blob of cloth" look. I've actually taken over her clothes and started picking out everything she's wearing for the day from panties and bra to shirts and pants/skirts.

It's been an amazing change. She looks good, she walks around with her head up more and has even started showing a preference towards wanting to look good when she goes out (she refused to wear a baggy shirt she sleeps in to the store over the weekend).

I think that since parents are the ones that buy our kids clothes, we need to take a step forward and be more active with what we buy and what we let them wear. As I told my oldest, "If you want to wear a sleeping bag all day long, fine. You can do it after you're 18 and living on your own."

How about the thirties? Some great films in that era as well :)

I have a great recommendation for you and your daughter. The Keys Of The Kingdom with Gregory Peck. You will really enjoy this film if you are catholic, love the human spirit, humbleness and just helping other people. Give it a shot and let me know how you liked it. I am on old film buff and have seen thousands from the 30s-50s and beyond.
In the interest of full-disclosure I have not always limited my approach to such passive measures: https://similarworlds.com/story?fid=3847103&tid=601151&name=I-Like-Short-Shorts

My dad just slut shamed trashy looking girls all my life then slut shamed me and my friends so I only dress trashy when I know I won't be seeing him
I would prefer that mine just absorb good taste. My parents did a pretty good job with me. Over time I came to really appreciate the value of modesty and class -- but I also started from a strong, but not overbearing base.

I realises long ago that we are living in the 21st century and not on the 40ties or 50ties, so I allow my children to dress accordingly to the time we are living in - just like I do myself.

That's a good idea! The fashion of the 1940s and 1950s was very feminine, classy and beautiful. How did your daughter react?

Yes I am the same. I love the old movies with ladies like Veronica Lake and Esther Williams.
