well its hard to find the exact answer but I visited my close neighbor once and her teenage kids were sprawled out on her couch and never showed any embarrassment or hint of discomfort when I (the guest) walked in. I loved that. My mother would have expected me to be up and ready for any company...

and her kids moved from school to college to very nice careers, seemingly without batting an eye, and both now have kids of their own and the gramma (my close neighbor) loves them all and the warmth and connections there are impressive to me. No loneliness, no anguish of betrayal, someone always cares.
