16yr old got drunk last night

not the most drunk ever but the drunkest she’s ever been. House party ofc. I gave her 4 drinks and kind of think she may have stuck to them bc i think she would have been a lot drunker if she was drinking more than that

She woke up at 7am this morning to go for a run so clearly not feeling too bad today lol

Maybe they are in a country with a younger drinking age

@NativePortlander1970 Maybe where you’re from that approach works. Here you’re fucking yourself over if you try to stop your kid drinking. If you succeed in stopping them going to these parties, they will be massively missing our socially. But most kids will just get sneaky and figure out how they can go anyway. The kids who have been given some alcohol by their parents won’t need to get it elsewhere. The rest get older siblings or friends to buy for them. Personally I prefer to know what my kid is drinking.

For us there is not really the option that your child won’t drink. If you think you have that choice, you’re naive. The options we have are to help them go about it safely or to lock them up for their teenage years.

I’ve hosted parties for my kids before and supplied beer and cider. Maybe in the US that is outrageous. Here it’s normal and considered good parenting. The kids who can’t have a little drink at home will be drinking vodka in the park. I know where I would prefer my kids to be.

@NativePortlander1970 At some point you have to realise people have different experiences, opinions, and values than you do, and that’s ok. By your logic almost every child at my kids’ schools would be taken off their parents, which is obviously ridiculous.
@OlderSometimesWiser I have questioned a few of her posts in the past other than this one.

@pentacorn not her mum. Trying to rein her in a bit and giving her some cans is the best option

@MyNameIsHurl As a Brit, this is stellar parenting. I wish I could get my son to drink only four drinks when he goes out, and he’s not much older.

@resealableheart my family is German so I'm familiar with the mentality. They are less likely to go out and get wasted like American teenagers

@MyNameIsHurl I have no idea what teenagers are like in the US when it comes to alcohol, but definitely sounds like a very different culture around it. It’s insane to me that you can be married with a house and a kid in the states before you can legally buy a drink.

@hannahJ Then if it wasn't your house party, how did she get there?

@NativePortlander1970 brother dropped her off. If you’ve met a 16 year old before, especially one who had ZERO rules until very recently, you know she would have found her own way there either way
