Did your parents offer you corporeal punishment as you grew up, or did they explain and impart values?

To smack a child because in stepping into the road they were at risk of being killed, or is it better to scoop them up and explain how the harm of being hit would cause so many other things in you and your family, so they can gain knowledge over pain.....

You need to hold a child or be ready to grab him or her. Neither punishments nor lectures were very effective when I was 2-4 year old. Getting a wooden spoon usually didn't stop me from repeating something I had been punished for before.
