It’s a federal offense to destroy or go through people’s mail.
If the mail is addressed to you, no one else is allowed to tamper with it. That's the law. Only exception would be if you're under 18

@Qwerty14 What if the bill is addressed in my name and one parents name, but the other parent is the one that destroyed it? Would it still be legal then?
@Unholymanswers If the one who destroyed it was not named on the letter than that was illegal. If the parent who destroyed it was named on the letter then that's fine.
Fact is though, we are talking about your parents. Legal action is never the smart choice. If you need the bill for something you could probably request a replacement or find one online

Nope it's against the law for anyone else to open another's mail without consent.

Not if you’re of legal age. If they’re your legal guardian it’s not as clear-cut.
