Nothing ever beat those awkward barbecues following a night where we had been called to that same home to protect my sister in law from the violent anger of my brother. Especially the time he made a passing attempt at a joke about how he’d threatened to beat her head in with a frying pan and bury her in the garden. They both laughed. Dysfunctional doesn’t even cover it.
