I have many times had my mouth washed out with soap
But my Mom cussed worse then a sailor ,she didn't think I might use the same words
but I never treated my kids how I was treated ,I used the switch but lead by example ,,,Damn was a major word in my house
5 whacks only on the rear ,through jeans normally gets their attention
It does not kill them but it does teach respect ,and to at least not get caught
My kids all tell me it was not so much the switch that got them in line ,,it was knowing they let me down and disappointed me
that hurt them the most
But I bet they thought about the switch when they had to make choices
But I started my kids young
My son is 11 and has not been really punished in 2 years
He is good at self policing himself
I am always complimented on his manners and willingness to help
and he was recently called out of class so a sheriff could shake the hand of the boy who stopped bullies on his bus
When his last principle drives 60 miles to take him out to lunch and give him a copy of the year book he bough so he can see his old class mates
Knock my switch if you want
I have 3 more that are grown I am just as proud of
they might bless you ,even pray for you ,,they don't swear

@rckt148 who washed your mouth out? And did they hate having to go pick out that switch for you to use on them?

@tring2222 My Mom was Bi Polar and turned out had Thyroid cancer too (which can make you nuts )
The soap was not the worst of her punishments
and I had a good switch
A cherry limb wrapped with black tape ,,just enough to sting through jeans but leave no marks at all
We had a peach tree next to our back door ,,put on killer peach's ,,,I killed it ,,that tree was not beating me anymore
But as it turned out ,,bring Mom back a switch that would break ,,she would use a coat hanger ,the metal part of a fly swatter and extension cord ,,the buckle end of Dads belt
I preferred the switch
I still have scars on my back from the belt ,,Mom had to hide me at grandma's from Dad ,,Grandma called Juvenal Justice on her (we did not have HRS )
Grandma took me from her ,,
But after a yr with no other kids and missing my brothers I went home
I left at 13 ,joined the service at 17 ,,I wanted as far from her as I could get ..
But she was a good Grandma ,,I forgave her
I took care of her the last 14 months of her life
My kids were also abused by step Dads
I got full custody of them when my youngest 2 were 13 and 15 ,my oldest was 18 so she went away to college
But when she returned she had to learn ,my home ,my rules
but my girls were so happy to have me back they were easy to raise really ,and with all the experience ,my son is a piece of cake ,,he is a very good boy .
The called me their Saviour ,still do
I was strict ,but I never abused my kids or Grandkids
But they all respect me ,,the punishment fit the offense
when they were teens they still got the switch
But then I could also take privileges ,,Like the phone
TV in their room ,,,the car so they had to ride the bus
The liked driving a Mustang to school ,,not the bus LOL

@MrDavies My daughter used the soap too but I couldn't
It reminded me to much of Mom
I was a Christian when I got my girls back and the Bible says to use the rod of correction ,it won't kill them but foolishness can ,,that was good enough for me
Now I can quote all the scripture on correction and how God says if you won't discipline your kids you hate them and my ex and her sister are living proof
Her sisters kid has been kicked out of Pre K
My son listens to his Mom for me ,,but were it not for me
My Grandson is 6'4" everyone will tell you ,the only thing that restrains him is his love for his Papaw
He don't want to bring me shame ,,He is 19 and will tell anyone his is Papaws Baby ,,but he is all man ,just very respectful
everyone says "Your just a proud Parent "
When your kids are like mine you have a right to be
and contrary to what some believe ,my home was not boot camp
love and mutual respect will take you a long way
But you can't make threats ,and you have to practice what you preach ..don't expect them to walk it if you can't

@MrDavies well I use a cherry limb
I even ring it so just in case I hit to hard it would break
Like I said it breaks their heart more then anything
When I tell my son come here he is already crying ,,he will tell me later he is sorry he let me down
But I also praise him a lot
Admit when I correct him and then find out I was wrong
I let him know ,,we have a deal ,I have never lied to him
don't lie to me ,even to avoid getting out of trouble
I show Grace and Mercy too ,,if he really repents
he gets to slide ,,but if he does it again ,its double the punishment ,,,I lean a lot to the good book ,its served me well ,,in my own life as well
