Is it irresponsible to tell a young child he or she can be anything he or she desires once grown up?

Good question.

I think the balance needs to be about encouragement vs. reality.

But setting kids up to make them believe the world owes them something, and that they're "special," is bad parenting via (probably) good intentions.
