If your child is really bad at something would you butter up or be blunt and honest?

My late mom flat out told that my drawing was hidious. She said I needed to take my time drawing and it looks really bad. I told her I did my best but she said it wasn't good enough and said maybe drawing isn't my thing. I cried so hard but she said, "You can cry all you want but it's not going to change how I felt about it. You asked so I gave you the truth." I cried to my dad and he said I did my best but it isn't the best. He said mom could have said it with tat but he said people are going to be even meaner. I was only 7. My mom was brutally blunt.
