MY New 18 stepdaughter borrowed my car and it was in an accident! How do I cope ?

Having a flicker of OMG freaking out— what’s going to happen to my insurance now ???? So that’s two questions. But I’m more curious as to how to talk with her, to what degree do I hold her financially accountable?

Was the accident her fault, or was the other party responsible? If it wasn't her fault, then I wouldn't hold her financially responsible, but would pursue the other party. If the accident was her fault, at minimum I would request that she pay the deductible on your claim.

@toddr13 it hurts but that’s the type of thing that has to happen right... I’m already suffering from being too nice to my 8 years old. If it’s too easy to have an accident (no consequences) then they don’t take it seriously :-(

@Mindful I'd ask for her to pay the deductible, and see what this does to your premiums. I would not be emotional about it, since it's a car, and accidents happen. However, part of being an adult is taking responsibility for actions, and that includes financial repayment when there has been a wrong. I would just be matter-of-fact, and explain that this puts a dent in your wallet, which was not a family expense, so she needs to work out a payment plan with you, once all the costs have been tallied.
