i wanted to share a story

this didnt happen to me but this was a story told by a fireman about his 2 sons, John, and Joe. this is a true story. this story is told from the fathers point of view

I had two kids, John Jr, and Joe. from a young age Joe loved my work. in fact, one day i took him to the firestation on his birthday. we got a milk carton and cut out holes so it looked like a building and put it on his cake. we set the carton on fire and told him to put it out. he happily took the fire out. the cake was a little soggy, but it was how he wanted it. when they were kids, John wanted to be a millionaire so he could help his family and give them a better life. Joe was destined to be a fireman. when Joe was around 17, i got throat cancer. the way my unit took care of me changed johns heart. he told me he wanted to be a police officer so he could help others. he took the police test. i told him “arent you a little young to take that test?” he said, “eh, no big deal”. when my two boys grew up, Joe became a fireman taking my badge number with my permission of course, and John became a police officer. every day, my two sons would call me. they would always tell me they loved me, and i told them i loved them back. on september eleventh, 2001. i got a call from Joe. he told me to turn on the television now. he said it was the big one, he told me, “i love you” i told him, “i love you.”. very soon, John called me and told me, “i love you” i said the same to him.

my son Joe, lived to be 35, and my son John, lived to be 34. it destroyed me, but i slowly healed knowing that most peoples last words to their loved ones arent “i love you”. knowing that these were the last words we exchanged to each other let me sleep. they both died september eleventh, 2001.

this heartbreaking story was a true story. i felt that i needed to share this.
