My dad doesn’t restrict my online activities but every now and then he’ll ask me about what I’m doing online.
GirlSerendipity · 26-30, F

A good and responsible father
Clairebare · 26-30, F
I guess I'm lucky. I've always been honest with my dad about what I'm doing on the internet so he's never felt the need to put filters on.

I use parental control programs until they are 18.
If they are paying for it, and it's registered under their name, they have every right to know what it is used for.

my mum has never had a clue about technology. she can now browse the web by herself but she didn’t even know how to do that when i was younger. i was about 8 or 9 when we got our first computer with internet, and i would google things like “dead people”... i remember one of the first things i saw on the internet was a decapicated body laying on train tracks. so, no. never had my internet filtered 🤔

@Suesinglemom really? For you or for other people?
anderst · 46-50, M
@Suesinglemom what would you block than?
polyandrym66 · 70-79, M
He should let you browse freely and openly without restrictions on you since you are 17yo.
Life has no restrictions/filters on what you are able to look at and see on your own.
It is a way of growing up and you should be able to decide what you want to look at and read about and how you want to express/show yourself to others and share your thoughts/ideas/feelings..

@SW-User it's in your own best interest, there is a lot of really unpleasant stuff online which your parents want to protect you from

@dunpender Do parents ever really ever stop wanting their children to be safe! It is not because one has “most” of the rights of a grown up at 16, which is a questionable statement in itself, that someone is not going to be endangered in the world, real or virtual.
Leaving a person to fend for themselves in a dangerous and often perverted and dark world is not parental love.
I understand that teenagers should not be coddled but letting them lose in the world without some supervision, guidance and conversation should not stifle them and their need for exploration.

As a father you did not have to deal with the internet or the potential problems that it can bring. Times change and not only for the better. Parents who take the responsibility of being a parent seriously understand that, and take measures to protect their children. Even if that protection means filters on their computers. Mum and dad have my support! @dunpender
