What are your thoughts on this?

My son, who is six years old, has a list of chores that he can do throughout the week. Each task accomplished earns him a certain amount of money, or allowance. At the end of the week, on Friday, the money he has earned goes onto a prepaid Visa card, which he uses to buy games, music, or whatever on his Xbox or tablet. He gets paid, which he loves, and he has a payday. He loves this. He can spend it, or he can save it. What do you think about it?

I think 6 is too young for this kin of reward system. They can barely wrap their heads around money as it is, to conceptualize it digitally vs having tactile notes and coinage they can count can be a difficult skill for them.

There something to be said for nurturing intrinsic motivation to keep one's home and person well kept. Do you as an adult get paid to do those tasks? Most of us don't. Do you want your kid expecting a pay off into their older teens every time they chip in around the house ... or would you prefer when it comes time to clean dishes or the floor or their clothes - that they just do it along with every other member of the household?
