Best way to 'handle' what would appear to be a belligerent 11 year old girl?

Challenging Environments - at this very moment, she is first time outside her own country, meeting her divorced fathers new wife-to-be's family, one UK, one US, what could be more challenging! You didn't know the context of course, and whilst 'all this' would more than explain unsettled feelings, the 9 year old seems 'well at home' with it all... Odd? Maybe that couple of years is all the difference, or, she is just a different person...
