She spoke instead of breathing. This is not a metaphor. There was no punctuation, no stop just full stretch of fast spoken phonemes and it annoyed me

So much that I started stopping her rudely to segment her speech.

It made me think "This is why men from that tribe are insane and love guns Their women talk like this"

A racist stereotypical thought that soon proven to be my own frustration.

As she shared more, I realized she carries too many burdens. She talks so fast it is hard to empathize with her. It is a stress based reaction. She works in homes to provide for her kids and she never had an education. No long term job opportunities. She does everything a mother does on her own and for her children.

It is dangerous when women aren't given access to education. Dangerous for the women and for their children. As I listened, she started crying and gasping. I hugged her.

Things will change a bit for her. And I do want that. But I certainly can't handle interactions that are that way too often. It burns me out. I like slow talks. I like pauses of logic to allow my brain to ponder on its own echoes.

I love that you shared this. It’s so hard to think past our own strong reactions in situations like that and find our compassion and empathy. I’ll carry this with me for the next time I want to run from how another manifests their struggle.
