Naw, it's a species survival trait -- if kids weren't cute they'd never survive to grow up, adults would kill them in frustration.

It's interesting, I think. Not that most people find small or baby animals cute, so much, but suff like your example of a salt shaker. Minature versions of things we wouldn't normally think of as cute. I remember thinking how cute the iron was, in the board game Monopoly, when there really isn't "cute" at all...about an iron.
