Keep in mind when people give you a gift that you are not obligated to give a gift back. Just know that they wish in time that you return the favor. You are thinking about them too. It is the same with visiting the person as well. Not just 1 sided.
@Beatbox34 it depends on some people tbh. Some people just love recieving gifts like a mooch. But in time there are others who will return the favor in a different form.
@Beatbox34 suggestion, if you ever give a gift to others. And that person says "well you shouldn't have." Just say honestly, "I do things in hope's someone else returns the favor in time."
There's a principle in the 48 laws of power along the lines of your text. I believe in China its sometimes referred to as 'taking by giving'.. give some small token to place someone under a percieved obligation for something that you want
I had the same problem. My issue was mostly going by their potential instead of success. Like they have such potential in whatever career they said they wanted or they have the potential to be more considerate.
