Some people stay in the same place all their lives because opportunities for change and advancement seldom knock on their doors, but things have changed profoundly for us during my father’s lifetime.
He began life the second son, but fourth child in an ancient Sicilian family and his prospects were limited by circumstances until he joined the Carabinieri. There his skills were recognised and put into effect very quickly, and after eight years he was promoted to a senior role in a special arm of the Carabinieri, and his advancement was guaranteed.
Now, he has a son who is a colonel in the airforce and a daughter about to marry into Papal nobility!
