Divorce and death
My hearing was supposed to be over by now. I probably would have had my divorce done and dusted. But suddenly, my father in law passed away. My husband and his siblings were very close to their father, so this has definitely been hard on the family.
I attended the eve of the funeral and the funeral itself. I had to brace myself before walking into the house because God knows if someone was going to yell at me to leave or ask, “Why are you here, now?” It was scary as hell.
Then I saw my mother in law. I hugged her tight. I love her so much. She hugged me too and asked, “Why did you do that to my son?”
No, Mum… I didn’t do this to your son. He did this to us.
But of course, I didn’t say that. It wasn’t the place or the time.
I did the rituals as the daughter in law. Nobody in the extended family knew about the divorce, and I didn’t want people finding out there and then talking, asking questions or putting the family in an uncomfortable position during an already difficult time. The least I could do was be there and pay my last respects.
My husband was stronger than I expected, and I’m glad he was. But somewhere along the way, he got the wrong idea and thought all this meant I might come back. I had to tell him that it didn’t change anything. The divorce is still happening.
So now, the hearing has been postponed. Definitely not how I imagined things would unfold, but oh well… life goes on.
