Earlier I was listening to a 5 years old kid read a text in English. It is his 4th language.
And I feel so proud.
Also 4 years olds identify letters and numbers in a foreign language. Do basic addition and subtraction.
I am proud and impressed.
I will feel I've succeeded once all the kids under my care out~achieve me. I always tell them they can do everything I can and better than me too. I tell them they are good, beautiful and intelligent every time they come to learn. I make sure they understand that fully.
Few days ago I lost a friend who had similar life circumstances to these children.
Not the first time and likely not the last time. It is what happens when you are directly invested in people who have to survive extraordinary circumstances.
I won't get into the details because I don't desire to debate about things people only watch on TV , and go on living their lives like it was a movie, yet expect me to waste my time making a point online.
It is silly and trivializing and selfish.
I told my students about my friend today. They shared with me many memories they had too with their own relatives and loved ones who are gone. We hugged and we talked about how we have to honor those who are gone and keep marching forward. And how we have to get equipped with the tools to build again, and more importantly to protect our loved ones..and that's why there is no option but to succeed and hope and try again.
