I always carried a quarter in my shoe just in case...and when I got back to school after a family visit I'd call collect my mom wouldn't accept the charges but she still knew I got home safe.

@HumanEarth I don't remember it being a dime by the time I could get myself in trouble. I think they got raised about the the comic went from 10c to 12c. I was told that since NYC had so many people depending on pay phones that it was the last place to raise the price.
