I Come From a Broken Family

Part of me is happy my parents split up. They didn't like each other and it wasn't worth the yelling. I mean, they yelled and fought every night. But it hurts. I wish they could've worked out but I overheard them say they only stuck it out until they thought I was "emotionally stable enough," for it. After hearing that, it felt like it was my fault they would fight. I just wish we could be together, still a happy family. I guess we were never a happy family.

My parents divorced when I was 5 years old and it broke my heart. Back in those days,1950, divorce was a huge social stigma. Some parents wouldn't even let me play with their kids. People who were divorced were seen as immoral and irresponsible and so were their children. Magazine articles (When I was first learning to read) said children of divorce were destined to become juvenile delinquents.

Glad to read you are mature enough to understand that a bad marriage was really to no one's advantage.
