A lot of you have mentioned maturity. That was my mom's excuse to leave me with babysitters through my teens. I say excuse because I wasn't immature (although I looked young for my age). She was strict and controlling over me and didn't want me to have freedom when she left the house.

By the time I reached my mid-teens new babysitters (who weren't much older than me) often asked my mom why someone my age needs a babysitter. They would often remark that when they were my age they were already babysitting. My mom always used the same line "I'm sure you were more mature than he is...he is not mature". She would even point at me sometimes and say "look at him". That was not only humiliating, I felt it gave the babysitter a wrong impression about me.

Another reason I think my mom pushed the immature thing so hard is she wanted the babysitters to be strict with me, not just hang out at the house and get paid. She gave them a list of chores for me to do, a bedtime sbe wanted strictly enforced etc. By making me seem like some incredibly immature boy she made it more natural for the sitters to assume the role of authority figures.

I have some people wonder since I was a teenager did I ever try to make romantic moves on my babysitters since they were just a few years older than me (one girl even went to my same high school, I was a Sophomore and she was a Senior). The answer is girls are not attracted to boys who need babysitters. I didn't even try.

@Cleancut Interesting message. What was the humiliating bedtimes that were enforced when you were a late teen ? Did some of your babysitters tease you ? Did you have to wear childish clothing ?

Bedtime was a huge thing for my mom. It changed over the years and it was always earler on school nights. By the time I was in my teens it moved up to 9pm. Yes I even had a bedtime in my late teens when I was a college student.

I had one babysitter who indirectly teased me about my bedtime. I was in my mid teens and asked the sitter if I could stay up later to watch the end of a TV show. She said no and I tried to argue. She got angry and yelled at me. As I sheepishly walked upstairs all defeated she said "goodnight" and waved goodnight at me so condescendingly towards me...like to taunt me. Then every night after that, even if I never again asked to stay up late again, she would make a big production out of bedtime "It's your bedtime, did I say you could stay up...go to bed now". Before I even had time to get up she would be like "what are you doing...I said go to bed now" and would always give me condescending, slow motion waves good night as I walked upstairs. I really didn't like this. I should have just want to bed a half an hour before my bedtime just to avoid all that.

My mom was huge into me wearing pajamas with cartoon prints...I remember I had one pair of pjs with Donald Duck. She would make me change into them early and would have babysitters make me do it as well. This went on through my early teens but thankfully did stop in my mid teens.

@Cleancut Did you have childish clothing apart from pyjamas ?
By college, do you mean university student ? With a bedtime ?

@bruno my mom picked my clothes and while not all of them were explicitly childish, she picked clothes that made me look young. I really looked young and I think it was more than the clothes. My mom treated me like a child so I still looked like a child. Even at age 19 a clerk at an airline ticket office asked my mom if I get the 12 and under child fare.

By the time I attended University I didn't have a bedtime but I did have a curfew. At age 21 I went out clubbing and broke my curfew. The girls I approached at the club were so mean to me! I was so nice and submissive it brought out the girls bitch shield to the highest level..they were verbally abusing me, humiliating me and rejecting the hell out of me. I didn't expect that so it shocked me. Then I came home and my mom was FURIOUS that I was out past my curfew. When my mom was screaming at me I couldn't help but notice those girls at the club had the same exact bitch spirit as my mom..wow were they similar. I thought to myself if those club girls could see my getting yelled at by my mom at age 21 they would both laugh and feel validated...they picked up on the fact that I was living like this...they could see right through me.

@Cleancut 19 years old and looking 12 ? May be due to childish clothing you had for the trip ?
I am surprised you did not have a bedtime when you started college.....
