How to Destroy a Family Relationship
A member of my extended family owes me $5,000.
Just to be clear, this was not a loan.
All I’ve asked for up to this point is a payment schedule, but I can’t even get that from them.
Whenever I attempt to discuss the matter with them, they tell me they’re tired of talking about it and will send me the money “right away”, or “tomorrow”, or as “soon as I get home”.
Six weeks into this, and I’ve yet to see any of the money I’m owed.
This is baffling because this family member and I have always been very close.
Keep in mind this person is not dirt poor. In fact, they and their spouse have a much higher income (combined) than I do and have a more affluent lifestyle. They bought a big new house, host dinner parties, own multiple vehicles, take long road trips, and buy pretty much whatever they want. In other words, they have plenty of money.
At this point, I have to conclude there’s no intention of ever paying me the money.
I’m now looking into filing a claim in small claims court. Not sure if I’ll do it as it’s a pain in the ass. But no matter what happens, the formerly good relationship with my relative will never be the same.
