My late Nonno was a deeply religious man πŸ§β€β™‚

My Nonno, who was the primary character on the farm, family farm, near Palermo to the west of the city by twenty five kilometres or so, and he had been for most of his life. He was the firstborn son of my great grandparents (who both died over twenty years ago) and had one brother and two sisters.

The whole family was religious and firm Catholics who were very happy to go to the city Cathedral every Sunday, and on holy days of obligation, but daily prayers were said at the family chapel in the house (the room was converted into a dry store in the two thousand tens) when holy places were not so readily used by my Nonno’s family.

My Nonno had a good size family by modern Sicilian standards but quite small by the standard of the time. My father is the second son, and there are three sisters (one died in a childhood accident on the road). All surviving children have families of their own, and they have been descending on the farm Christmas and Easter every year until Nonno’s death just before Christmas last year.

Now my uncle is head of the family, caring for our Nonna, there are likely to be fewer family holy days celebrations. My Nonno would have loved this not to be so, but if Nonna suffers with failing health then our connections might be in some way threatened by a new dynamic of the family. It is the reason my father is looking at purchasing a property in the Palermo area.
