I met my great-grandfather, who was born in 1883, when I was four, the year before he passed away. He spoke to me about being the last surviving member of his original family. He had been the youngest of six brothers who were musicians in the French Quarter.
One distinctive thing I remember about him was that he had bright blue eyes, and I asked him about them. He replied, wryly, "A white man thought my grandmother was pretty…"
