Strange reactivation of old responsibilities

My daughter just informed me that her father, my ex, fell and crushed a vertebrae. She says he’s in serious pain and the meds aren’t working, and they don’t think surgery is required but they have an appointment tomorrow with a surgeon to make sure he doesn’t need surgery.

I feel this intense pressure that I should be taking care of him. We’ve been divorced for more than a quarter-century and have rarely even spoken to each other.

Old habits die hard.

I think this happens more often than people talk about in the open. I remember my grandmother having such urges when my grandfather was ill but she decided against it but she was struggling and she told me so. And I can see how my mom gets into it, despite they live in different houses, some days she cooks and takes food to him.. although she then complains and gets out of it... It is difficult isn't it ?
I hope he'll get better soon.
@SW-User I hope he does, too. I don’t wish him ill.
