Was just looking into some family history.
My father's uncle, the man who my father is named after (I am named after my father) fought at Flanders and the Somme in WW1, and a few other places.
He was cited in military dispatches.
The citation read ‘For conspicuous gallantry while acting adjutant. When an attack on a village was held up, and touch was lost with the advanced companies, he went forward in the dark, under heavy artillery and machine gun fire, found the companies, and brought back valuable information. Throughout the operation, he displayed the greatest coolness, and the success was in great measure due to his behavior under trying circumstances. For this, he was awarded the Military Cross.
He was promoted to Lieutenant and still acting Capt. and Adjutant on the 27th of December 1918.
He was also awarded the Belgian Chevalier de l’Ordre de Leopold avec Croix de Guerre on 21st August 1919. The decoration was established on 11th July 1832 and is awarded for extreme bravery in combat or for meritorious service of immense benefit to the Belgium nation.
He was also awarded he was awarded the 1914/15 Star British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
After the war, he became a convicted bigamist and fathered 18 children with his 3 wives 😬😬😬
