Family life in Slovakia

I was six when my parents moved us to Odesa, in Ukraine, so I have very vague memories of living in the country of my birth. By the time I was eight, my parents were ensuring we had family holidays back in Slovakia each year. Obviously, the weather in the mountains is different to the weather on the Black Sea coast, so it was around this time of year almost every year, school-permitting, that we went home to Slovakia and stayed with my grandparents. Each year we would alternate which grandparents we visited as my paternal grandparents live in our home village, but my mothers parents live nearer to the capital, Bratislava.

My father has a sister, who came to Odesa when I was nine, to live and work. She had separated from her husband, and he kept her three daughters. My mother has three brothers, all live in Bratislava, and each have both sons and daughters. I have ten cousins. I am the youngest of the children.

Summer holidays were often family affairs, and if not in Ukraine, we would travel to Bulgaria or Greece.
