Which is the tougher job, being a spouse or being a parent?

Also, why?

The way I would put it for myself is that that the stakes of parenthood are far higher. The risks of parenthood are far higher and the rewards are far higher. If, heaven forbid, we lost one of our children I don't know what I would do. But all the years of raising them and watching them grow have been the best years of my life. BTW, for me, 18-21 (your stated age range) would have been far too young to be a parent. If you mature like most American males, you should wait until you're closer to 30 to embark on parenthood.

@ElwoodBlues I'm not sure if I even want that, I'm sure I someday want a spouse though.
@JimFarris16 No problem! Not everyone is cut out to be a parent. I know a number of happy couples who never become parents.

And, if you're young, your opinions on the subject may change. Either way, just make sure you're on the same page with any potential spouse you get serious with.
