I think it's your partners responsibility to defend and show that his/her parents don't get to disrespect you. They don't have to like you but you are their partner and if the inlaws can't respect that, your husband or wife should keep them away from your lives.

I’m sure they have their own pain and struggles. And that’s very opposite to how it was in my family. My older sister married a guy who treats her very well. We grew up being treated like burdens, so good for her finding someone very different to that.
