@LunarOrbit I vaguely remember. My only thought at the time was, "They play those same songs on the radio non-stop, couldn't someone just get a blank tape and record them when they come on the radio AGAIN?"
Kind of like today how the most downloaded songs are the ones played on the radio non stop. Like, "You cannot wait five minutes before it comes on again?"
There were also those time-life music collections. "You will cherish this collection forever." My thought on THAT was - "that music sucks, who would buy it?"

@Punches We had one of the first cassette recorders back in early 70’s. It was a Ross and I did just what you said…but DJ’s back then always talked till the start of the lyrics and qued the next song before the first was over.
And you had to be quick to push record and play at same time. Y they could never make one button record still dumbfounds me

@LunarOrbit Oh my GYOD I hated that! And they would talk about NOTHING!
Of course when recording a song there was often the concern of "I hope I am not recording over something important."
I can only assume that mess is the analog equivalent of "are you sure?" but even then, pre-recorded tapes had that uncovered notch to prevent recording on.

Even logic-controlled cassette decks do not have that. You hit record but then still have to push "play" after. I can only assume that mess is the analog equivalent of "are you sure?" but even then, pre-recorded tapes had that uncovered notch to prevent recording on.

@Punches Which we put tape over to record on top of, so that we could erase a shitty song and put something else in its place (usually decapitating the song immediately after) lol

@LunarOrbit The kids today will never know the struggles we went through to "download" music 😄
