In 1999 he published some information about his family, stating that his parents have already died (offically: Maria Ivanova died in 1998).

Since 1999 another woman also claims to be his real mother, stating that she recognized him on TV. Her name is Vera Putina. According to her, Vladimir was her son with russian mechanic Platon Privalov and is the child of an affair. According to this story, Putin was not born in Saint Peterburg, but in the Georgian SSR. She married a Georgian Soldier after his birth who pressured her into abondoning Vladimir. She then gave him to his grandparents in St. Petersburg, which are speculated to be the people Putin originally claimed to be his parents.

Vera Putina, as well as a supposed elementary teacher of Putin were pressured several times by Russian and Georgian people to remain silent.

She also stated to be up for a DNA-test. Two people who investigated her story and relation to the Russian President coincidentally died. (Artyom Borovik: Plane Crash, all documents lost in the fire; Antonio Russo: Murdered in Tbilisi, Georgia during the Second Chechen War).
