How well do you know the people you have loved in life? Is it the version of them your mind has created them to be, or the real them that you see?

I don't feel I really knew any of them, in spite of having lived with some people for 20+ years. I didn't know how to connect with their hearts and inner lives, or maybe they just weren't very forthcoming.
