Last night I had a dream that was very interesting
I dreamt that I was playing in VR (virtual reality) and chatting with people, when I suddenly realized that I could touch things and it would feel like the real thing. I was like wow, it feels just like I imagine it would in real life, like I could actually feel the slightly course plastic between my fingers of the display monitor i was running my hand over, just like I know it should feel.
Then I woke up and realized that our minds can make us actually feel physical things by pure imagination and from memories alone. So could this somehow be done for real games? Like if our imagination is so strong, then it's probably not even necessary to do all the complexities that is required for mimicking the ability to feel things, I imagine that all it would require is to be able to decide which image to show in your head, and the imagination does the rest for you, sensation of touch, emotions, and everything else.
It would require to put your mind in the same state you are in when you're sleeping, probably with some chemical, and then almost like lucid dreaming the game just decides what images to show you, directing your "dream" for you. Not everything in the game would be identical for each player, since it's based on your own brain, but it'd probably be close enough to where you can play multiplayer.
Some people report that after playing VR for a long time, they get what is referred to as "phantom senses", meaning they're able to feel touch or smell things in the game. I thought it was obvious bullshit before this dream, but now maybe I could believe that it's just their mind that's imagining it up for them, like awake dreaming.
Just some sci-fi nerding thoughts for you, doesn't mean I think it should happen.
