Learned something new.

An avoirdupois pound (abbreviated as lb or avdp) is the common system of weight used in the United States and the UK for everyday items, defining a pound as exactly 16 ounces, 7,000 grains, or 0.45359237 kilograms. It differs from the troy system used for precious metals, which only has 12 ounces per pound.

A troy ounce (31.10g) is heavier than an avoirdupois ounce (28.35g) so an ounce of gold is heavier than an ounce of lead. ;)
