Could EMDR be an option in your case?
People with traumas can benefit from EMDR.
In your case the nightmares could be a subconscious outlet of trauma that happened earlier on in your life.
90% of our experiences happen subconsciously, 10% happens consciously.

In my experience as a healthcare consultant I have advised many people to opt for EMDR.
It helped many.
@BreakfastGirl I never heard of EMDR. But I already know my nightmares are caused by childhood trauma.
