The Chains That Bind
Chain Link Promises
by: Rob Paquin
I trace back all my promises
I mean to keep as many as I can
I mean to give back everything
To all those who lent a hand
And I’m sure that I will fall short
Before the end of everything
But I’ll do the best with this final test
As I give all I can bring
And so I shall not forge another
Chain that is a promise
Because in the end when things transcend
I’d prefer to leave here honest
Life sways like a pendulum falling
swaying back and forth - to and fro
Back and forth across all those years
But down is where it goes
In July of nineteen seventy
My sun was chose to rise
And it took a crooked path to wend itself
Across all my darkening skies
Storms have raged like tempests
All the seasons had their days
And when the cruel God calls me back
I’ll stand up and have my say
And like the grain of sand cast off
Into the deepest ocean
I shall sink beneath the waves
Without too much commotion
But promises like chains that bind
Upon my useless soul
Must be kept and tended as best they can
Before I pay that toll.
