I At Least Want To Make One Of My Dreams Reality

One of my long time dreams is finally coming true. I have always wanted to live in a quiet beautiful rural place with weather warm enough to swim year round and a big deep swimming pool to swim in everyday. And a vegetable and flower garden with fruit trees.

I live in Upland, California where I have lived for three months. Formerly, I had lived in Hollywood, California for most of my life and have lived through many struggles and have many unhappy memories there in spite of the palm trees and the near perfect climate.

Upland is called, "The city of gracious living " and it IS. The one problem with gracious living is that it's strictly for those rich enough to afford it! When I found that out, while living in nearby Ontario, California with a friend, I was sure that I could never afford to live in Upland. I told my friend that I had better look for an apartment in "Downland." My friend suggested I give up on renting an apartment and just look for a rented room in a private home. I considered it and...

Welcome to my Mini-Mansion, as I call it. It's me, an old lady, with five guys for roommates. And a patch of unused land I've turned into a thriving vegetable garden located one patio away from the big deep pool. The neighborhood is quiet, up in a hill where all mansions should be. I only have one room but it's got a beautiful view.

I wanted to move here to be near a Calvary Chapel church I like very much, the one I was baptised in last year and also to be near my friend, Jean, whom I had missed since I retired from the job we both worked on where we met. I have another friend, Pam, who lives in a town about 35 miles from here.

I like living in the desert, especially Upland which as its name implies is at a slightly higher altitude than other towns around here, thus making it a bit cooler and giving it a fine ambiance with the mountains on it's skyline.

It's been a difficult transition for me at my age. I was forced into retirement, then lost most of my money on a bad business decision, then two close long time friends died, and when my car died permanently, I was stuck at home with no friends, no co- worker's, no money, no transportation....and then my health went haywire, one infection after another, got bad medical care which made it all worse, in and out of the hospital, hearing damaged, sudden fast growing cataracts making me blind, sicker every day until finally some good medical care and some eye surgery put me back on the slow uphill road to better health.

And in the middle of it, my evil giant corporation landlord illegally evicted me from my apartment home of 28 years necessitating an expensive stressful legal fight. The day before we were due to go to court, my attorney dropped my case because I was all out of money so I had to go into court by myself, half blind half deaf and suffering from a fever and present my own case. My kind neighbor went with me because I was unable to drive. I presented my case in an orderly way but the landlord's attorney stopped it and asked to negotiate with me. He offered me a nice bundle of money to move out and I accepted it.

Now I am regaining my health, little by little, in the mini-mansion in Upland, California. I am now daring to hope for a better life and have regained my eyesight, some of my hearing, have stopped having anxiety attacks and am on a careful healthy diet. I swim for an hour or more every day and work in my garden. Life is good. I have a lot to be grateful for.

Kudos to you! You are very brave and determined. I also left a town where I felt very isolated and unhappy and move to an island that to me is the most beautiful place in the world.Like you,it was not easy but I did it and never regretted it.I hope you have many years of happiness in your new home with your new companions.

When I first read your name, I thought you were from Vermont. Be that as it may, I wish you many happy years in your new mansion. Looks like you have a lot of help when you might need it too.

If you would have gotten here sooner, you might have met him. It is all in the timing.

oberpa, I used the name greenmountaingal because I am hopelessly in love with Ethan Allen, the leader of the Green Mountain Boys and hero of the American Revolution. Hopelessly because we are separated by 227 years of American history.
