. . . by AI. And so were several "professionals".
When I find new music online, these days I search up the band, not only to learn about the musicians, but also to verify that they are a real band, not some AI construct.
Most of the time, if someone is posting AI-generated music, I wouldn't expect to find a Bandcamp page, reviews on known music sites, or a physical LP for sale.
Most of the time.
In the case of Hail Darkness, I was fooled completely, as were several reviewers writing for known muisc sites. The perpetrators of this "experiment" (as they term it) went to lengths to make their AI generated "music project" seem to be comprised of human musicians. Fictitious biographies of the "band members." Bandcamp presence. A physical LP for sale (on vinyl)!
One commentor posted to the effect that before they support another band they find online, they want to see footage of the band performing live. There are plenty of music creators posting online that probably never perform on stage, but they will at least post a video or two of themselves playing the music, even if it's just in their home studio.
I should also state that I intellectually find it somewhat surprising that the perpetrators behind Hail Darkness chose the rather "niche" genre of occult rock in which to perpetrate their hoax -- seems like it would get much more traction in a pop genre, such as EDM, etc. I say "intellectually" surprising because in reality I am not surprised by much anymore . . .
