I Asked My Friend To Prom And Got Rejected
I have a friend at school who I only see at gym class. We have only been friends for about 4 months, but after the first three I started to think about her in a different way - and I wondered if she was thinking the same thing.
She leans up against my breasts as we sit drawing or stand waiting for class to end. She put her arm around my shoulder as we watched a movie in class. She is very free about physical contact, I suppose - though my sister has since told me that these things are "just stuff MY friends do all the time!". I misread them as signs of romantic affection. I'd never had friends, male or female, who had interacted that way with me.
So when Prom month rolled around, I'd been considering asking her for a couple weeks.
It was a Monday in the first week of April, and we were standing around waiting for our last class of the day to end so we could go home. I was waiting for the gym to empty out so I could ask her in the clumsiest way possible:
"Uhm, I know I haven't told you this before, but um. You'll probably say no, but.. I like girls, and guys, and I like, I like YOU. I was wondering if, if you would like to go to prom with me?"
I'd definitely misread. As she got on the bus to go home, we resolved it and I blurted, "Bye, BFF!" before running away from the buses toward the elementary school parking lot. That's where my mom parks the car, right next to the high school.
I felt like the biggest idiot.
The next day, despite my fears, things were back to normal. You could say I'm the luckiest girl in the world.
