I Joined The Nestle Boycott
A few days after my daughter was born (about a week before my wife was due) my wife got a large package in the mail. It turns out it was from Nestlé and was a free sample of baby-feeding materials and a cute napsack. We can't figure out how they got our address and due date and our midwife couldn't figure out how they got hers! My mother (also a midwife) was there when the package was opened and departed from the typical dignified composure she usually carries and went into a rant about how unethical Nestlé is for killing breastfeeding as they do.
My family is a big believer in breastfeeding. If the mother is healthy and doesn't have any problems producing healthy milk, then there's no reason not to breastfeed. The nutrients and antibodies and so on that mother's milk contains beats the pants off any formula. I'm also told the baby benefits psychologically, but I don't know how much science there is there.
Among the most immoral of Nestlé's marketing is to 3rd world countries, where formulas are seen as the scientifically advanced (i.e. "Western") protocol for child-rearing. Unfortunately, their water treatment is not invested with the same advancement, so in addition to depriving their children of the goodness their mummies can provide, they poison their babies w/dirty water!!!
Thus, the Nestlé boycott. This isn't just something that I'm doing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nestl%C3%A9_boycott). Unfortunately, a complete boycott of Nestlé products is not easily done--they're nearly a monopoly. You'd be surprised at how many brands Nestlé owns :(
