Why are kids content to sit inside 24/7 these days?

When I was 7,8 years old, all I wanted to do was go outside, play football with kids on the street, get a pickup game of basketball going, ride my bike, go for walks in the woods, just explore the outdoors and have fun. I've always had access to video games and a phone, but they do not seem as fun to me. Man, times have changed.

there's such thing as internet, tv, games now.

@Anonsmiles: I had them too, I'm 20. I loved ps2 as a kid, but that did not keep me inside. I loved going on AIM and Myspace, that did not keep me inside. Cartoons were cool, but that was an early morning activity.

@Anonsmiles: There was also tv and games back then, too. Maybe internet, too.

@jfinn298:
@BlackBloodDemon:
generations change and have different interests. surprise, surprise.
BlackBloodDemon · 22-25, M
@Anonsmiles: It's not really that different. It's more like the internet got better and faster. People 10+ years ago were talking and blogging like we are right now, and kids were on kid websites (example: KOL). Not that much different.

@Anonsmiles: It says you are 18-21, so we are from the same generation. And as my friend suggested, we had the things these young kids do.

@BlackBloodDemon: okay but clearly something changed to make kids have more interests staying in. it's not like every kid randomly decided to stay in forever and never go outside.
jfinn298 · 26-30, M
@Anonsmiles: Any idea what brought about that change? I am not criticizing the kids per say, I am simply trying to understand how they have become the way they are. It would be interesting to see how such a big change happened so quickly.

@jfinn298: games in particular probably advanced a lot more than when they first came out when i was younger, perhaps. there's a lot more games it seems than when i was a kid. and i think it could also happen to do with that kids aren't really allowed out on their own anymore, with random kidnappings and murders and such.

@Anonsmiles:
@jfinn298: Maybe we're all thinking about this too much. There are kids next door to me, and I always see them outside whenever they get the chance. I think kids still go outside, but people always see kids whenever they aren't, and say, "Oh, kids aren't playing outside anymore."

This isn't true, because a lot of kids still go outside. It's either the kid, or the parents doing. Today, parents are much more cautious when it comes to their children.

"Oh, don't bring your kids outside! It's too dangerous!"
Well, the whole world is basically a danger, so they're going to have to face it sooner or later. Teach your kids to be safe and responsible, and you won't have a problem.

@Anonsmiles: Your point is well taken.

@BlackBloodDemon: it's not enough to just teach them to be safe and responsible when there's predators that can easily just kidnap them the first chance they get, though. i've seen a video of this girl who got kidnapped when she was standing right next to her mother at the store. kidnappers have no boundaries.
jfinn298 · 26-30, M
@BlackBloodDemon: I do not think it is so much a "black and white" answer as perhaps I thought, to my own ignorance. There are kids who do not go out by choice, believe me, can't give them all a pass, not all parents are that way. It may be a little bit of all.
jfinn298 · 26-30, M
@Anonsmiles: There are some sick people out there, you are right.
BlackBloodDemon · 22-25, M
@jfinn298: Perhaps, and there could be reasons, too.

I'm really scared of bees (like deathly scared), and they're always around my house, so I didn't go outside, because I was scared of the bees. My sister would help me get over the bees, so I can go outside. She walked outside first, and then told me everything was fine. It took me a while to get outside, but I eventually went out.

Getting my bike and scooter was the worst, because the area where my stuff was located, was the place where all the bees roamed. I wish the bees would go somewhere else.
jfinn298 · 26-30, M
@BlackBloodDemon: I've had unpleasant encounters with bees. When I was 8 and at my great grandmother's house, I stepped outside and a whole nest of yellowjackets came out and attacked. That was not fun, very painful.
BlackBloodDemon · 22-25, M
@jfinn298: Ouch!

That reminds me of a similar experience I had at the park. I jumped off a log, and there was a wasps nest underneath. Not fun. /:
