Did you try calling the IRS? I know it can take a long time to get to a real person and can be frustrating but it is really your only option.

@gingershuman: did they send you a letter? If they did, there will be some kind of reference on it. I'm not surprised they blew you off. You have to be persistent. And you must sound confident, like you are in charge.

I concur with the others here, you need a tax specialist/accountant and/or attorney to help you out with this one. The tax rules can be so over complicated, that's why I pay someone to do mine.

Get a certified tax specialist. It is almost impossible to do this on your own.
