I don't think you can, or should, generalize. We're here for many different reasons.

Both; mankind seeks freedom in the form of control and hates it when that choice gets taken away. Advertising abuses this fact by putting "only limited time offer!!" on everything, making (ignorant, dumb) people go crazy for the products.

I knew a Marketing director who was hired to increase sales in a store because they weren't selling so well. All he did was empty half the supermarket and make everything "last item availableeeeeeeeee!!!". My Lord.. everything was sold in minutes. How stupid people can be.

For us who are controlled by money/bills/laws already, it is definitly to seek freedom.
